I've been using Tom Pickard for years. No complaints yet.

Thanks Brooks, I checked in to them and they seem reasonable.

What kind of rates are they quoting you? I've been with Travelers for a while, but I think they're kinda pricey.

Have you had any claims? I've been lucky and have not had any.

I used to be with TCP and am now with Traveller's. Might go back to TCP if I can get a better rate. One thing I noticed that is different, when I need a COI or additional insured, TCP did it quickly but Traveller's takes a day or two...I got the impression from the questions that I was asked that Traveller's had more discussion with their underwriters for each certificate. And TCP charged for each cert while I was not charged by Traveller's. TCP has (or had) a discount rate for APA members...

It came out to about $730 a year. But I have no studio and no equipment...so mine is covering rental equipment and liability.

Their online estimator seems pretty accurate.

Strewth! I'm only paying $150 a year in insurance. Covers me for $250K plus $5,000 of gear. Mine's with State Farm.

Most places in the US require minimum of $1 to $2 million in liability.

Yes.. My studio was broken into about ten years ago and a few things stolen, a computer, and a 35mm body and a lens, mainly... They took care of me very quickly.. I don't remember exactly how long it took to get a check though.

They no longer are affiliated with APA, but when they parted ways, they started giving all photographers the same deal, so you didn't need to be an APA member anymore.

That's up to them. Nobody has ever asked about mine other than do I have any. My insurance is primarily to cover my backside against somebody making up a bogus claim and trying to sue over it. It'll pay the lawyers and the other part is to cover me if I accidentally drop and break some gear or if somebody pinches an item that I'm not using. Unless people start demanding more insurance then I'm not shelling out for it as it comes out of profits.

You are crazy not to insure yourself for liability. Your tagline says "always a pro", live up to it. In your forgetfulness you leave an extension cord not taped down and some wandering kid trips on it and busts his front teeth. I would not want to be in your shoes when his settlement "cuts into your profits"

What about when some new assistant tries to hot swap a head out of a speedo and blows his hand off? Or the place catches on fire?

It is usually the weekend warriors that come in under insured under priced,
they own very little, so it is not worth a lawsuit to begin with, I am glad some my clients demand and make us issue a policy it weeds out the Crappy biz photogs out there.

I don't use extension cords or tripods. I prefer to carry a lean light kit on me at all times. There's nothing for anybody to trip over.

Well then you're safe. I wouldn't worry about anything else. Wink

SPW... You've been good lately. Don't step back over the line. The insurance you carry would be grossly inadequate for all but the hobbyist photographer.
