I'm going out to nycfotoworkshop revews this fall. I need to choose who to see I can magazine people agents or art buyers. Here's my thinking art buyers would be less interested in an out of towner but the have the big dollars. Magazine people may like to see someone fom out of town but I don't do much editorial work but hey work is work. Agents while it would be great to have a rep and they would probably give great crits of my book the chance of landing an agent is a long shot so that pretty expensive for a crit. Take a look at my site and let me know what would be best. I could do all three but it's a lot more money than just seeing one. _________________ doug

Hi Doug,
I took a look at your website(s) and it is really hard for me to tell what YOU want to do. You have a lot of different subject matter, shooting styles plus two websites and a blog, honestly it is confusing. Personally I like the night time panoramic shots the best.
Nit Picking here, you have two college degrees yet the grammar in your post makes you seem less educated. If I was an art buyer I would hesitate to contact you based on that alone.

I always thought Canadians were supposed to be nicer than folks in the USA?
Guess not! |

I am being honest, not trying to be mean. This is a PRO photo forum and I am giving my professional opinion.
Why don't you contribute and give your opinion on what Doug should do with his money?

I'd hone your work back on your site to more of an advertising vein; then go after art buyers. _________________ r.c. durston

I agree with vjp about the confusing array of work but especially about the poorly structured wording of your post. I was going to respond to that yesterday without even looking at your site. If that's the way you write to buyers, they may not go further either.
And I'm not trying to be mean either. You need to know candidly about the impression you're making rather than have polite comments that give you no useful feedback. _________________ James Cook

Isn't it all part of the package? If you want to be treated like a top notch pro you have to walk the walk and talk the talk. Impressions count.
If I were a client it wouldn't matter that you wrote it on an iPhone - especially f they don't know it. If it's somewhat incomprehensible, which that was, it won't fly. _________________ James Cook

*psst* I don't want to dogpile on you, but if you want criticisms restricted to the merits of your work, that could be done _________________ Jim Lafferty // Photography // New York |

IMO: you have a few strong-to-very strong shots lost in the noise of a lot of fair-to-just OK shots. You can't come to NYC bringing anything but your A game. That there's a ton of shooters here that operate above our level here goes without saying -- but there's even more who operate at exactly your level and they're not doing much beyond assisting/teching. Certainly not going after an agent _________________ Jim Lafferty // Photography // New York |

As others have said, you do definitely have some strong work, but it gets lost in the meh stuff. I think you have to take a step back and rather than ask questions of outsiders, you need to look inside and decide what work YOU want to do. I get the impression from your site that you are showing what you think people want to see rather than showing what you love and want to do. But, if you dump the "I should show..." images and keep the "I love" images, you'll have a good, cohesive body of work that will attract clients.
Next step is to find the right clients for THAT work.
Hope that helps-
