I was wondering how many of you have started a Facebook Fan page. I did but God knows if it'll ever really mean anything.

I have and I know Brooks has one too.
I use my to post new images, news, and any BTS images that might have taken place. I find it a good avenue to communicate with clients in a subtle way instead of an "in your face" email or mailer programme.
I can let my regulars know where I am and what I'm up to. Personally, I'm not really interested in a blog where clients and photographers alike see what I'm doing every single day. FB just seems a little bit more casual.

First thing I did on Facebook years ago, before the popularity. I restricted myself from putting more images there, because I don't like their Terms of Service (ToS). While they have changed their ToS, I don't see much benefit from adding images there, since I would rather have it as a path to my website.

You also need a private Facebook account, and set yourself up as the Administrator of your Fan Page. The postings on my Fan Page are items I feel relevant to creative professionals, since that is largely my fan base.

Gordon's methodology is wise. The TOS are still not what I'd like to see for photogs to be posting images--besides, it isn't necessary. Write posts with links to your website or blog and keep the images there.

One thing I will say if you post images on FB, put a visible notice on them. While I do NOT advocate that for your website or blog (it ticks off legitimate buyers way too much to make the tiny tick up in safety worth it), on FB that extra bit is worth it.

Another thing about fan pages-- do NOT send out invitations repeatedly to get people to fan your page. That is worse than the usual spam. Many, many people have their FB connected to their email or mobile device and getting those invitations all the time is annoying as hell. So, no more than once every 6 months, please. Less even. On the other side, you can always post an appeal on your personal FB page saying "if you want to fan my biz page, go here..."

Good luck!

Hey Rob.. I don't have a fan page, just my personal page. I've been toying with the idea too since so many of my photographer and model friends have them.

I know all this social networking is not a science, but those who have both a blog and facebook fan page - do you post separate items to each? Or do you just post to your blog and then link it on your facebook page? I do both, but was wondering what others do. Thanks for any responses.

I try to segregate but find it difficult to come up with content for each network. I found linking tumblr and twitter to the page effective. I also got one of those cool pagemodo splash pages leading to other places on the web, or more info.

As far as how I use each one, I don't use them all the same way. Some people follow me on multiple sites and it would be annoying as hell if they got five notifications from me all at once of the same thing.

For my Facebook business page, and Twitter, I try to post photography relevant stuff as well as news or talk about myself.

Can you link me that thread?

I've lost track of it and it was a good one.

One thing I actively dislike about Facebook is the way people will see a hotlink to one of my photoblog posts, view it, then comment on it on Facebook. I always erase them, and I even have a note in the notes section asking people to comment about the blog on the blog.

My photographer friend Wil Fry speculates that this is because so many people want Facebook to be the entire Internet for them, all in one place.

That's not all I dislike about Facebook, but that's one of the biggest. -R

That's an interesting read.

It's crazy how much time people are investing to try and just be visible.

I remember sweating over the cost of yellow page ads. Ah, the good old days.
