Kind of a weird question I guess, but I think in a way it's really important .. I did a family portrait one time and I didn't dress up at all (not being in front of the camera I thought why do I need get dressed up), but on the other end, I think it shows respect in a way to the client or person your shooting...
I guess it all comes down to who and what your shooting....

Sometimes our newspaper's staff is allowed to wear jeans at the office - a reward for a successful sales promotion in advertising, the day the football preview comes out, the first day of spring, whatever - but I don't wear jeans. The public doesn't care that it's jean day at the office. All they would see is a guy from the newspaper dressed like he's going to a softball game. I dress office casual unless I have a more formal occasion to attend, for which I dress up. I represent my newspaper, and even if others on our staff don't, I want to look professional and respectful all the time.
Also, I would trust a photographer I hired more if he dressed like he cared about his (or her) appearance. Would you feel confident if your surgeon showed up for a consultation in cutoffs and a t-shirt? _________________ http://richardbarron.net/ |

If it is a formal occasion you are shooting then dress more formally.
If it is a new client/AD then I believe that first impressions count, but on a multi day shoot it generally becomes more casual.

If I'm doing an industrial shoot it might be my oldest pair of grubby jeans and T ... on corporate shoots dockers and a button up shirt, hardly ever a tie unless it's requested for board of directors or high level ceo kind of shoot. Most important is con-fey shoes and pants imo. _________________ Art Dickinson

I simply aim to match the occasion. If I'm shooting business people wearing ties, I'll wear a tie. If I'm shooting outside or where I expect to get dirty, then it's rough-n-tumble clothes and boots. For my type of shooting, I do best when I can blend in with the people around me. _________________ Chicago Photographer |

I judge it mostly on location and possibility of getting dirty. So most of the time I end up with jeans and a black T-shirt, or a sweater. Colder weather means some sort of jacket; musicians might mean a beat up leather jacket.
If I do have a nicer location set-up, I will go with nice pants, maybe the black T-shirt, though usually a simple dark long sleeve shirt. More corporate office locations would mean a nice suit jacket added to the look.
I will wear a tie to the occasional meeting, but never on a shoot. Any tie risks snagging gear, bags, lights, or cameras, so I avoid them. The other reason is that I should be relaxed and focused while I am shooting, and a tie is a distraction for me. _________________ Ciao!

Whenever I think how nice it would be to have a full time job I hear about this kinda thing. Like when my sister sells $XXXX more widgets in her cubicle job she gets a candy bar! And not a full sized candy bar, the fun size that you give to kids on Halloween.
Grown up adults in the year 2009 being told what kind of pants to wear at work Is there a hair length check and are the ladies required to make sure their skirts are below the knee? |

Didn't we have this conversation before? Tuxedo t shirt is a win in all settings. _________________ I'm gonna sign your pitty on the runny kine. |

This topic often returns. I think one of the problems in discussing it is that people miss the differences between jeans and a tshirt and really well cut jeans and a tshirt. The difference is often in the details, like what shoes and watch and grooming choices are made.
Look at GQ at some of their casual looks (I'm talking to the men here)--a lot of those looks are appropriate for photographers (no shorts as a general rule). Great shoes, attention to grooming, jeans that FIT, good fabrics...it's not that hard and it doesn't have to be uncomfortable at all.
There is a difference between funky eclectic and frumpy, but I'm afraid too often photographers (both genders) fall into "frumpy." Your appearance, physically, is part of your marketing. You should be well groomed always and casually chic. People in the creative fields are lucky they get to dress casually in the first place, let's take advantage of that by looking gooood. _________________ Leslie Burns

When I shot for the May Co. many years ago. My boss Chuck(best described as a mischievous elf) was considered an executive...and therefor allowed to used the executive bathroom. He was standing at the urinal one day wearing his "Dr. Suggs Hot Wax Sex Treatment" t-shirt when the President walked in and used the urinal next to him. The next day there was a dress code..."no t-shirts with writing on them".

Leslie, I bought the clothes in GQ, but I don't look like the guys in the clothes. _________________ I'm gonna sign your pitty on the runny kine. |

Actually, you don't hafta look like the models (frankly, most of them look like underfed boys). I have seen people of both genders who were objectively not beautiful (Note: I'm not saying you fit that category--I don't have any idea what you look like!) look incredibly attractive when they were styled well.
There is a reason they say "The clothes make the man."

Still wearing my 20 year old Blundstones (they needed a professional polish recently), nice jeans and a white t shirt. I'll wear a dressier shirt over it if we are working inside or with a more upscale client, till I get hot and need to take it off.
A safe bet is always dress at a level similar to the client. _________________ r.c. durston

Or, when in Rome, dress like the Romans.
I'll second what Leslie wrote about marketing. On an assignment, you're representing your client as well as working for the trust of the subject. If word gets back to the client about you, you want it to be entirely positive.
Shooting in a factory or industrial site is about the only place I could see wearing a teeshirt. I have steel toed shoes and my own hard hat in my car. That goes over well with the folks walking me through and always helps on access.
Doing a formal portrait of the CEO or Board of Directors, I sometimes wear a suit, but a tie at a minimum. My assistant is expected to wear a nice shirt and slacks, which can be jeans as long as they're clean and neat.
For everything in between, I dress about the way I would expect my subjects to dress.
In all cases I pay attention to my grooming. There's no place for dirt under fingernails or spinach between teeth.
The more I look like I'm one of them, whoever they are, the more they tend to trust me. The trust converts to co-operation.
If you look professional, you're more likely to be treated professionally. _________________ James Cook

Always dress as well or better than your clients - they will pay you better
But also, give yourself a creative twist.
