Meh.

One client, one time... it will get him some buzz, but I don't think it'll help his business. He'll get people who want to get it for free and when they don't they won't hire him.

The company that gets the freebie will take it and never come pack with money in their pockets UNLESS (longshot) a small company hits big after using the images, then maybe.

Every photographer I know has shot for free before--friends, family, whatever. We all do some free stuff--service bizes always have. This is just the same, only he's using it in his marketing.

Don't sweat it.

I knew a web development company that tried the same thing once. They ended up getting a newspaper article and a television interview out of it. Of course they wanted (needed) to do income generating work, so this was done as a PR stunt. It worked for them for a few more months. Personally I think that company tried it because they were going down anyway, so why not give that a shot. I don't know if that UK photographer is in the same situation, but without getting some PR out of this, his chances on a one-to-one business collaboration, that lasts into the future, might mean this is a last gasp.

I think low or no budget is vastly more risky than paid shoots. While some of us have done images for cheap, or trade-for-portfolio, or even deferred payment, these types of things are only done for incidental value. Few of us can afford to give away what we can accomplish.
