This is a call out to all studio owners out there. I have just taken over the management of a NYC studio and am wanting it to be full (as expected).

What tips do you have on successful marketing ?

I am a photographer first and foremost, so have spent the past few months making the place as easy as can be from the production side. Lots of lights and gear on hand, good coffee, music and cold fridge. The studio now works well for shoots and video. I just need to find photographers who are looking for a studio, but where to start.

I would hope this thread could help all studio owners, not just this one. A good place to share tips.

Have you looked into getting listed in Resource? Also... there's a bunch of spots online you could get placed, names are escaping me at the moment but there are production resource aggregating sites that have sections for studios, assistants, photographers, etc.

Is the place large enough to throw an industry-only event? Not sure how business is over at Root, but their parties look amazing Very Happy

Otherwise, get in on AdBase/Agency Access and maybe send an occasional email promo to producers.

Thanks Jim, a good start.

The Resource website is being a little grumpy at the moment but I will get listed with them.

The studio is not so big, so good for 50 people but probably not more unless we can use the roof. Saying that lots of models, MUAs, Stylists and Photographers will make for a good party !

I will go and look at AdBase/Agency Access.

I post on Backpage consistently. It actually pulls some quality renters.

A few years ago my rental business was decent with quality shoots, Maxim, Ann Taylor etc. Primarily from Backpage but for the last year or so rentals have dropped dramatically. Economy based I'm sure. Although I don't rent for parties so I'm missing a piece of business I guess.

I will go and have a look at backpage, not something I had heard of before.

This is what has happened in the studio also. We are offering more and more services as a way of bringing clients back.

The parties would just be to network/hang out with models. Not as a way of making money.

Out here on the other coast party rentals can fill in some gaps but be very aware that you're drawing an entirely different crowd. Lock the place down like you've never done before and hire a clean up crew that expects a party mess.

Don't worry, we would be thinking of parties as a way of making money, just as a good networking event and way to show off the studio. The space is right in the Chelsea Art district and more on the refined side. Crazy parties wouldn't go down too well !
