What are everyone's thoughts on fequency of direct mail? I don't know why, but I thought every couple months would be a good goal...

What about email compaigns? How often and how soon after a direct mail?

ianmcc I don't do mail outs but your post might be better as a Poll. When you post a topic you can select the poll feature and give 2 or more selections to choose from. Example choices for frequency of a mail out could be:
  • Never
  • Every 30 days
  • Every 60 days
  • Every 90 days
  • Every 180 days
  • Every 365 days

People then can vote without posting or vote and post comments. The poll gives a very good visual of the results in percentage and number of votes. I will post a poll question later on tonight as an example to show off this very usefull feature.

You might want to add something about not a scheduled program, I mail out randomly. It has had limited success.

I also do random mailing, 4 times a year, however i also have limited response. but i do get a couple jobs each time. Sometimes not the jobs i was wanting when I did the mailout but jobs indeed.
anyway, I have a thought. instead of mass mailing I was going to pick say 5 agencies I know i'd like to work for and drop them a framed promo series. Ex. 5 pictures all in one frame with a certain theme. Looks GREAT! however is it over the top?
any feedback would be cool.

Anything I read says the more focused you are about the client/ projects you want the better you will be able to comminicate that, and the better the chances you'll get a crack at it!

If you have certain budget for promo, say $2000 per year. It's better to invest $10 each for 200 people than $1 each for 2000. The more targeted your list the better.

I'm going to be doing my first mailer in years pretty soon. I'm planning on having an A and B list. The A list will be the targeted clients that I know more about. They will get calls about my promo and I will try to see these people in person or if they are out of town, I'll try to get them to see my book.

The B list will be everyone else in the shotgun approach. If I find interesting (interested) people in that list, they will get moved to the A list for future mailings.

I'm even thinking of putting a very small AA list to send small signed prints to, but I haven't researched them enough yet.

Hi Brooks,
Just surfing through the whole forum, I am wondering how your mailing campaign went on. Do you have made any statistics or follow up ? Will you do it again and haw many times a year ?
Thanks

Have never done a mail out. As such, the question I would have is what did you get in return for one mail out? Is there a number of jobs you received as a direct result?

Hi everyone. This is a question that has no correct answer. :-)

First off. I just started doing mailings again after many years. The first wave was broken up in three different lists and the third and most important list hasn't gone out yet as I'm still researching my contacts on Adbase when I have time here and there. The first list was Record Companies, the second was Editorial and the third is Ad and Design Agencies.

I haven't received any feedback on my first mailing of the two first lists yet, but I never did a phone followup so I'm not sure if there's anyone out there with my first card on their wall or in their filing cabinet.

As for what to expect, I think that depends on who you're targeting with mailings. If you're targeting local client direct and even the general public in your area like a wedding, portrait studio, or events photographer, you might be more concerned with an immediate response from mailings.

On the other hand, I'm not as concerned with immediate results with the people I'm targeting as I'm mainly trying to get my name out there and plant a seed that I hope will grow throughout a year long campaign (1 card every three months). Then to do it again next year. Most of the people I'm targeting are using photographers that they are comfortable with and breaking into that group is pretty hard. I don't think my work is the type of thing that blows people away. It's clean and direct and although I may have my own unique vision, what I do is more about gaining trust in clients and subjects to get the job done. I doubt that anyone is going to look at my first couple cards and say "I need that signature Brooks Ayola style for my next ad campaign!"

Then again. I may be wrong. :-)

I think you nailed it, two totally different reasons for mailers.

First being to get "the word out" or create a buzz if done with the right mailer.

Second reason would be for immediate feedback/business.

If I were to do this, I think coming up with one that covers both bases would be the optimal for the business I am trying to create.

Brooks,

May I ask, who it is that you address the mail-outs to within the ad agencies, record labels and editorial mags? How long after the mail-out do you wait to make follow up calls and lastly, who is who do you ask to speak with when you do make follow up calls?

Thank you so much for all of the valuable information that you provide so freely!
